Astral People
For this project, I have been asked to create a design inspired by project three graphic style, Punk design. Rather than research the movement, this time, I have been asked to explore an event that took place at the Opera House and reinterpret it. I have decided to work on an “Astral People” event in collaboration with “Vivid Festival”. The idea was very exciting because I aimed to mix two worlds that are very far from each other, Hip Hop (the event) and Punk (the visual design style). Chaos, overlapping and handcrafting was the main inspiration for this project; thanks to the previous task, I could improve my approach to the design and also add a more modern touch to my work. Jamie Reid, with his collage, text and unconventional messages, stimulated my fantasy to create something impactful (Tate, 2009), like, for instance, the choice of handwriting on Photoshop the whole text for the event information, including the title, or sending a message like “ Listen don’t talk”. Regarding design principles, I wanted to create an impactful colour contrast, using a bright yellow for the layout and black and white for images, text, and visual elements; doing so allowed the design to stand out, especially once the design had become a brochure or a poster. For the text, instead, I thought the only way to reflect the pure Punk style was to make it myself, with a “cartoonist brush” so that the letters would really look handwritten with a shaky and inconstant flow. No grids have been used for this project, reflecting the pure essence of punk design, “No Rules”. In conclusion, the design succeeds in embracing two worlds so far away, Hip Hop and Punk style, with an impactful brochure rich in colours, visual elements, and photos, ready to be resizeable and print in different formats.
